1) Two songs in which animals talk. Must be actual talking--not merely the implication that talking would happen during, say, a card game.

2) Two songs in which natural phenomena laugh and cry.

RULES: GD originals only. From memory.

Does "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry"
count? Even though its a Dylan tune?

And totally off topic but I guess could be trivia~
What is the show that Uncle Bobo introduces the with
"and now, a peaceful Sunday evening with the Grateful Dead".
(or something close to that). Anyone???
Im thinking 1970 for some reason, but could be wrong...

I could REALLY use a nice, peaceful Sunday eve with the GD,
and I wish you all the same. Another grate trivia Q there Lou :)

Thanks, C. But the GD in "GD originals only" doesn't stand for "Glorious Dylan".

Looking forward to the correct answers, and like the guesses as well.

And to answer my own little Q, it's:

I suggest you all put it on for a spin

Dr Beechwood here -
It was not a Sunday, but you could apply 5/19/77. It is pretty soothing. Has worked for me today.

You did say animals. By your definition, there is only one animal that actually talks--the dog!

How do you call for your coffee without talking? Pre-arranged hand gestures? With alligator hands?

The difference with Dire Wolf is that there is no mention of conversation at all during the card game.

1) The alligator talks in Alligator and the crow talks in Uncle John's Band.

I have no idea about the second one...

"It's the same story the crow told me, it's the only one he knows."

That's close enough for me. No direct quotes from the alligator either.

What about shout?

In LiG, the thunder shouts "I am."

And the wind Black-Throated Wind has a black throat. Maybe it laughs or cries with it?

Can't be Dire Wolf cuz he explicitly excluded implied talk during a card game.

The river sings in Brokedown, but I don't think it laughs or cries.

Lou, there's a natural phenomenon that "wails," but I cheated and looked up the lyrics of that song so I won't say it. Is that one you're thinking of? (It's definitely not going to be first on anyone's mind.)

No-this one cries, in the sense of crying out, saying something.

HINT: It's my favorite GD song.

The "wails" is in Lazy River Road.

It can't possibly be this one, although the wind certainly cries something out (and no, I am not trying to pretend this is from memory! But many many points to anyone who can recognize it):

Stranded
cries the south wind
Lost in the regions of lead
Shackled by chains of illusion
Delusions of living and dead

Uh, because I didn't expect it? And only what I expect is possible? (Oh, um, I don't think that works.) But it definitely is in the running for Most Obscure Favorite Song. And it would HAVE to win the prize for Least Performances By a Favorite Song.

Btw, a natural phenomenon arguably "cries" something in China Cat.

Comic book colors on a violin river
crying Leonardo words
from out a silk trombone

So either the colors cry the Leonardo words, using a silk trombone, or the violin river cries Leonardo words.

You don't think the comic book could maybe both be coloring on a river and crying from out a trombone? But attempting to parse the lyrics of China Cat is sheer madness.

I have a long and sincere history of advocacy for What's Become of the Baby: http://archive.org/search.php?query=forumPost%3A1%20AND%20davenport%20become%20baby

You're right. It could be a comic book. With many hands. Some to color with, some to hold the trombone. Though personally I go with Meaning Number 2 3/4: "all of the above, but not."

Fortunately, "tuba" didn't scan right. However, "xylophone" would have worked.

Supposedly if you put glow sticks in water and tap them in the dark, this is what happens -- a glow stick xylophone! I bet if you took this away from that kid, there'd be a lot of colorful crying.

You're right about Dire Wolf.

Still, between Tennessee Jed and Alligator we've covered talking animals (the Alligator mumbles "Bitches.")

But I don't see why I don't get credit for Brokedown and Crazy Fingers, both thanks to the Willow -- to wit.. "Going to plant a weeping willow.." and "Hang your heart on a laughing willow."

I would have officially given you credit but, being a natural phenomenon yourself, you have an unfair advantage on this question.

I found another one, but I have to admit I looked it up. In "What's Become of the Baby" the opening line is "Waves of violet go crashing and laughing."

You can't get credit for a weeping willow! That's its darned name! That's like giving credit for a "talking animal" to any song in which Pig talks.

But Crazy Fingers is definitely a natural phenomenon that is laughing. Also, there's a cloud with hands, although it's neither laughing nor crying. Just reaching, tapping and touching. And possibly a person who is raining, so that's the reverse ... a person doing a natural phenomenon.

Yes on #1.

Well, the song's crying in Stella Blue, while the reference to the wind crying is in a simile. Close enough, I guess? I was thinking of another one in which the wind actually does cry out.
